Knowing species from other regions could be useful if you happen to be in that region when you are looking for medicinal plants. Also, plants can move locations over time and what was once found i one region could travel to another through pollination.
Yes, it would make a difference traveling in different seasons because plants bloom at different times. A plant who's petals have medicinal qualities may only be in bloom during July, for the rest of the year this plant may be useless.
Local know the names and purposes of many plants. They may have another name for a plant than what you know it as and its important to gather all information.
I would not trust my knowledge. This is because I am an amateur herbalist and ingesting wild plants can have fatal effects if done incorrectly. I do not know enough about plants uses.
